Axis 03 · Migration & modernization
Virtualization and data centers
From VMware vSphere and Hyper-V to Proxmox VE, with Ceph and Proxmox Backup Server, on your hardware, with a rollback plan.
The challenge
Since Broadcom acquired VMware, perpetual licences have given way to subscriptions, and the cost of your virtualisation is no longer predictable.
NEXTBIT migrates your virtual machines from VMware vSphere or Hyper-V to Proxmox VE, an open platform with no virtualisation licence. We start from your existing hardware, size Ceph distributed storage and backups with Proxmox Backup Server, then validate the whole setup on a real pilot. The migration then proceeds in waves, each with its own rollback plan, without unplanned downtime. Your team is trained throughout the project and stays in control of its platform.
What we do
- Inventory of virtual machines, hosts, storage, networks and application dependencies
- Design of the Proxmox VE cluster on your existing hardware, with high availability
- Set-up of Ceph distributed storage or reuse of your existing storage arrays
- Deduplicated backups with Proxmox Backup Server and real restore tests
- Conversion and migration of virtual machines in waves, with a rollback plan
Our approach
- 01
Assessment
Inventory of virtual machines, licences and hardware; identification of dependencies and critical systems.
- 02
Design and pilot
Proxmox VE and Ceph target architecture, success criteria, then pilot migration of a real sample of virtual machines.
- 03
Wave-based migration
Progressive cutover of virtual machines, a rollback plan for each wave, service checks after every cutover.
- 04
Operations and handover
Monitoring, tested backups, documentation and training of your team to administer Proxmox VE and Ceph.
What you gain
- No more virtualisation licences to renew
- Predictable costs, with no vendor lock-in
- Your existing hardware reused
- A trained team in control of its platform
Frequently asked questions
Can we keep our current servers?
In most cases, yes. The assessment checks that your servers, network cards and storage are compatible with Proxmox VE. If a piece of equipment is a problem, we flag it before the design phase and propose a solution, without reselling any hardware.
What happens if a migration wave fails?
Every wave has a tested rollback plan. The original machines stay intact on the old platform until the wave is validated. If a problem occurs, we return to the previous state, analyse the cause and fix it before resuming.
Is Proxmox VE suitable for production workloads?
Yes. Proxmox VE is built on KVM and LXC, proven Linux technologies, and provides high availability, live migration and built-in backups. The pilot lets you verify this on your own applications before any migration decision.
