Axis 03 · Migration & modernization

Incremental application modernisation

Monoliths broken down step by step into containers and Kubernetes; each step delivered and verified.

A monolithic application that is hard to evolve: every change is risky, releases are rare and everything rests on a few people.

NEXTBIT modernises your applications without rewriting everything at once. We analyse the monolith, identify the parts that are worth separating, then extract them one by one into containerised services deployed on Kubernetes. The existing application keeps running throughout the transformation. Each step is delivered, tested and verified before the next, with a rollback plan. We set up continuous integration and deployment and train your developers in the new practices.

What we do

  • Analysis of the application's code, dependencies and data flows
  • Containerisation with Docker and deployment on Kubernetes using Helm
  • Progressive extraction of services around the existing monolith
  • Continuous integration and deployment pipelines, with automated tests
  • Monitoring, centralised logs and documentation of the new architecture

Our approach

  1. 01

    Assessment

Analysis of code, dependencies, infrastructure and the bottlenecks that slow down changes.

  2. 02

    Design and pilot

Target architecture and step-by-step breakdown; a first service extracted and put into production as the pilot.

  3. 03

    Wave-based migration

Further services extracted one by one, each step delivered, verified and reversible thanks to the rollback plan.

  4. 04

    Operations and handover

Monitoring, documentation and training of your developers in Docker, Kubernetes and continuous deployment.

What you gain

  • More frequent, less risky changes
  • An application that stays in service during the transformation
  • Reproducible, documented deployments
  • Teams trained in modern practices

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to rewrite the whole application?

No. A full rewrite is long and risky. We work in steps: the parts that block change are extracted first, and the rest of the monolith keeps running. Some applications simply benefit from being containerised, without being broken down.

Is Kubernetes right for our organisation?

Not always. Kubernetes makes sense when several services must be deployed and scaled independently. For a simpler application, containers on virtual machines are enough. The assessment tells you the most reasonable option, without oversizing.

Where will the modernised application be hosted?

On your infrastructure, on a private cloud or with a local hosting provider, depending on your constraints. Containers and Kubernetes are open standards: you can change hosting later without rewriting the application or depending on a single provider.
