Axis 03 · Migration & modernization
Database migration
From Oracle, SQL Server or DB2 to PostgreSQL: compatibility report, procedure conversion, replication, high availability.
The challenge
Annual licence and support fees for Oracle, SQL Server or DB2 weigh on the budget and tie you to a single vendor.
NEXTBIT migrates your Oracle, SQL Server or DB2 databases to PostgreSQL, an open, licence-free engine known for its reliability. We start with an automated compatibility report that lists the schemas, data types and code to convert. After a pilot migration of one schema, we convert stored procedures, set up replication for a short cutover and configure high availability. Every step is verified through automated data reconciliation.
What we do
- Automated compatibility report on schemas, data types and code
- Conversion of stored procedures, functions, triggers and views
- Data migration with automated reconciliation between source and target
- Continuous replication for a short, planned cutover window
- High availability, backups and performance tuning on PostgreSQL
Our approach
- 01
Assessment
Inventory of databases, licences and the applications that use them; automated compatibility report.
- 02
Design and pilot
Target PostgreSQL architecture, then pilot migration of a real schema, measured against the success criteria.
- 03
Wave-based migration
Code conversion, data replication and database-by-database cutover, with a rollback plan for each wave.
- 04
Operations and handover
Monitoring, high availability, query tuning and PostgreSQL training for your administrators and developers.
What you gain
- No more database licences to pay
- An open engine, with no vendor lock-in
- Data verified by automated reconciliation
- Teams self-sufficient on PostgreSQL
Frequently asked questions
Will our stored procedures be rewritten by hand?
Only partly. Conversion tools handle a large share of common code, and the compatibility report identifies exactly what needs manual rewriting. Each converted procedure is then tested against your real data during the pilot.
Will the application be stopped during cutover?
Continuous replication keeps the PostgreSQL database up to date while the old one stays in service. Cutover is then limited to a short window, planned with you at the least disruptive time for your operations. Its actual length is measured during the pilot.
Is PostgreSQL as reliable as Oracle?
PostgreSQL is a mature engine, used in production in demanding sectors. It provides transactions, replication, high availability and hot backups. The pilot lets you verify, on your own data, that performance and reliability meet your criteria.
